Under general supervision, performs work of considerable difficulty in making verbatim stenographic records of legal proceedings and transcribing same; performs related work as assigned. Incentives Relocation assistance up to $2,000.00 60 hours banked vacation to be used immediately. $1,500.00 bonus at the beginning of employment and $1,500.00 after one year of hire. 2% incentive pay for other certifications such as Merit, Real Time Certification, and Registered Diplomate Reporter (RDR). Arizona Certification Renewal Fee paid by the Court every two years. Additional transcript income estimated at $10,000-$20,000.00 per year. Typical Duties Uses computerized stenotype equipment to prepare verbatim records of legal proceedings. Prepares and distributes accurate transcripts in required format within specified timeframe. Reads back from court record during proceedings or prepares rough draft transcripts for court use. Maintains stenographic records to ensure accessibility for the period required by law. Purchases and maintains a personal reference library, and utilizes online reference sources. Purchases and maintains software, hardware and supplies necessary for the performance of court reporting. Hires support staff as necessary. Prepares and maintains records and reports. Performs related duties. Essential Functions Sitting in court or at desk for machine shorthand writing and transcription; working with and around other court staff, clerk's staff, attorneys, defendants and the public; dealing with interruptions from co-workers, phones and unscheduled hearings; repetitive motion hand/wrist for machine shorthand writing and transcription; vision acuity (near/far) for computer and courtroom work; hearing for courtroom testimony; touch for shorthand, and computer work. Minimum Qualifications Three years of experience as a court reporter, or any combination of education, experience and training which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. Additional Requirements Arizona Court Reporting Certification. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Civil, criminal, juvenile, domestic relations, grand jury, and mental health dispositions and probate proceedings. Court operations and docketing procedures. Statutes and Rules of Procedure pertaining to Court Reporters. Rules, regulations, and statutes pertaining to the distribution and filing of transcripts. Principles and techniques of computerized stenotype, archiving and retrieval of steno notes, and transcript production and delivery of both paper and electronic transcripts. State and federal rules of procedure. Research techniques – online, library and telephonic. Operation of court reporting software and hardware, litigation support software, advances in technology. Current court issues regarding making the record. Ethical standards and court rules applicable to court reporting. Specialized and technical vocabulary, i.e. legal, medical, scientific, engineering, physics, and others. English grammar, punctuation and usage. Working Knowledge Of Content, location, and use of reference materials, library indices, and legal citation systems. Rules, laws, policies, and practices pertaining to professional conduct and ethics. Activities of state and national court reporting associations. Procedures of other departments within the court system. Security practices within the court system. Equipment, computers, and software associated with the production and management of stenographic notes, transcripts, and official records. Ability To Utilize computerized stenographic equipment to produce accurate records of court proceedings within established timeframes. Work extended hours under stressful conditions. Prepare and maintain well-organized manual and electronic files. Prepare reports and present facts clearly, orally and in writing. Remain impartial and detached during emotionally charged proceedings. Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with judges, attorneys, court personnel, participants in litigation, other agencies and the public. Follow written and verbal instructions.
