Research Laboratory Assistant
The Animal Care and Research Laboratory Assistant demonstrates proper care and handling of rodents in the research lab as well as knowledge and skills in laboratory maintenance and support related to experiments for clinical media development and collection of oocyte and embryo samples. He/she directly reports to the Research Director. He/she should function in an independent fashion, should be responsible, attentive to details, and have a desire to develop professionally.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The core function of the Animal Care and Research Laboratory Assistant, working with the Animal Care Supervisor, is to ensure the mouse facility is maintained in excellent condition. Daily tasks include but are not limited to; cage changes, feeding and watering animals, sweeping/mopping to maintain a clean working environment, administering injections to animals, ability to humanely euthanize animals when required, and unpacking and putting away shipments of supplies.
This position also supports the various laboratories of the Research Department. The Animal Care and Research Laboratory Assistant is responsible for performing various laboratory maintenance and upkeep duties including but not limited to; removing biohazard trash from laboratories, washing and/or autoclaving supplies, maintaining liquid nitrogen storage tanks, restocking supplies, and recording/maintaining gas tanks and incubators. Specific tasks and responsibilities will change with the needs of the Research Department. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
The Animal Care and Research Laboratory Assistant is expected to participate in a weekend work rotation and on occasion may assist with or support research experiments (these are never to supersede animal care or laboratory assistant duties).
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job operates in a professional office and clinical setting with frequent use of medical instrumentation and equipment, supplies and material. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, including computer keyboards and mice; telephones, photocopiers, scanners, and filing cabinets.
The duties of this position involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. This position involves an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues or a potential for spills and splashes from them. Appropriate protective measures and training are required for every employee engaged in these tasks.
The duties of this position involve very physical activity; exerting up to 35 pounds of force frequently and occasionally exerting up to 75 pounds of force. This position requires the employee to stand for long periods of time and regularly push or pull large items and racks on wheels.
The duties of this position involve the ability to handle animals (rodents) in a safe manner and to exercise basic principles of animal care related to environmental control, disease control and sanitation.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, see, and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; will occasionally sit and/or walk; use hands and fingers to grasp, pick, pinch, type; and reach with arms and hands. Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; operation of standard office machines and equipment.
