Coeur Mining, Inc. is a U.S.-based, well-diversified, growing precious metals producer with five wholly-owned operations: the Las Chispas silver-gold mine in Sonora, Mexico, the Palmarejo gold-silver complex in Chihuahua, Mexico, the Rochester silver-gold mine in Nevada, the Kensington gold mine in Alaska and the Wharf gold mine in South Dakota. Coeur Alaska’s Kensington mine comprises an underground, hard-rock gold mine, associated milling facilities and a campsite in the historic Berners Bay Mining District, 45 miles north-northwest of Juneau. The mine is accessed via company transportation including bus rides and a boat ride through Lynn Canal.

Coeur Alaska is an integral part of the local community and actively supports education and workforce development programs, environmental stewardship efforts, arts and culture, and local nonprofit agencies through monetary investments, in-kind support, and employee volunteerism.

Approximately 400 miners, mechanics, engineers, operators, geologists, environmental technicians, exploration, and business leaders operate the Kensington mine. About the Job:

The Safety Coordinator will report to the Safety Supervisor and is responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive health and safety programs to ensure regulatory compliance, promoting a strong safety culture, managing documentation and inspections, supporting training and emergency preparedness, and service as a resource for all departments. The schedule for this position is 14 days on at the mine site located about 45-miles north of Juneau, accessible only through company transportation, and 14 days off.

Responsibilities:

  • Stop work for safety concerns and abide by safety best practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Design, develop, and implement safety and health programs and ensure compliance with all regulations including federal, state, and MSHA Champion and enforce a strong safety, environmental and healthy work culture.
  • Ensure that Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) documents and records are identifiable, controlled and maintained in an organized, quickly retrievable manner, timely submission to State and Federal agencies as required
  • Maintain all MSHA and safety recordkeeping
  • Perform and document workplace inspections and create action.
  • Assist with loss control investigations, analysis and record keeping.
  • Assist in training mine rescue team members.
  • Support and participate in the Company’s Industrial Hygiene program.
  • Comply with and support Company policies and procedures.
  • Develop and update occupational health and safety systems, policies, procedures, and manuals.
  • Assist with federal and State agencies.
  • Be available and approachable as a resource for all departments on the mine site.
  • Maintain MSDS Online tracking of approved chemicals coming to site.
  • Develop SOPs, training programs, and presenting them to large groups.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Ability to work safe and promote safe behavior in others.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and a team-oriented mindset – being respectful, reliable, and easy to work with is just as important as technical skills.
  • Experience coordinating safety and loss control programs.
  • 3+ years’ experience in an underground mechanized production mine.
  • Current MSHA instructor’s card for both surface and underground is preferred.
  • Candidates must be certified, or able to get certified, in advanced first aid.
  • Strong leadership qualities, problem-solving skills, and proactive approach to anticipating and addressing challenges before they escalate.
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills with all mine site personnel.
  • Computer literate and proficient with Microsoft Office software.
  • Proven capability to follow all company policies and procedures.
  • Strong analytical, technical, communication, and problem-solving skills are necessary.
  • Sets high standards for self and others, builds trust, and takes accountability.
  • Ability to work a 14 day on 14 day off, camp-based rotation.
  • Preference given to Alaska residents.
